Toriyama's humor/parody manga Nekomajin, released after Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, features several concepts introduced in the series, and several Dragon Ball Z characters make various appearances in this manga. The character designs for Dragon Ball Z were created by Minoru Maeda from the Raditz Saga to the Cell Games Saga and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru from the Great Saiyaman Saga to the Peaceful World Saga. Like Dragon Ball, the music for Dragon Ball Z was composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi.

The anime first premiered in Japan on Ap(on Fuji TV) at 7:30В p.m. The other names the production was considering for this second series before they settled on Dragon Ball Z were Dragon Ball: Gohan's Big Adventure, New Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball 2, Dragon Ball Wonder Boy, and Dragon Ball 90. The anime also features characters, situations and back-stories not present in the original manga. The separation between the series is also significant as the latter series takes on a more dramatic and serious tone. Usually shows are made and the merch comes later because of demanding fans, whereas Disney has toys for UPCOMING films out on the shelves months before the movie debuts because they assume since they are Disney what ever movie is gonna have people buy the toys because it promotes both. Also the fans are the reason merch is created for series like this. Technically I'm surprised that on this site most anime are tagged at being a cash grab for consumerism and merchandising but very few no Disney movies get this label and Disney merch is way easier to find than DBZ merch has ever been. Since it's popularity, it has spawned a few merchandise like action figures, shirts and video games but I wouldn't say it's consumerism. This is the series that popularized the fighting anime genre. It is good, better than I remember it being to be honest, but I still question so many people calling this their, ahem, 'go-to action series'. And that's why I don't consider this one of the greatest anime titles of all time. But again, you have to wait so long to get to all of this stuff. Piccolo is also a lot more interesting than he was in the first series. Even Bulma and Vegeta surprisingly make for a better couple than I remember. Gohan and Videl are arguably the best couple in the series and Krillin and 18 are just precious. I actually found myself strangely wrapped up in the Great Saiyaman Saga because it actually moved at a good pace and gave us something different. However, it really says something when in an action show, my favorite episodes are the ones where there's no fighting and it's just the characters interacting. And I think what really gets to me about this, too, is that honestly, DBZ has some really good story lines and characters.

What made the original series better, imo, was that everyone had unique abilities, there was more emphasis on hand-to-hand combat and the longest fights ever went for was 3 episodes. The manga's at least tolerable as the super sayajin transformations don't take forever. That right there is its biggest flaw, which is kind of funny as a lot of other big Shonen titles are guilty of this yet DBZ fans tend to get after those shows for this stuff while treating it as if it's not a big deal here.
